I know it's not #ReviewAndDiscussionDay , but I thought I'd pose a question for all of my fellow Oncers:
One of the biggest arguments I face when trying to get friends to join our illustrious fandom is that OUAT is simply "Live-Action Disney."
Personally, I think there are enough MAJOR difference to set this show apart. Often enough it's darker, giving it a much more realistic feel, but sometimes it is lighter, because really, who doesn't want to believe in happy endings? Add that to the ever-varying cast. major divergence (see what I did there?) in some storylines away from Disney entirely, and I believe that OUAT can hold it's own.

Your thoughts?

  1. Just tell them to watch two episodes. If they don't like it that's fine.

    Just two episodes.

  2. CaptainSwan would never happen in live action; neither would SwanQueen, OutlawQueen, and many many more ships

  6. Personally?
No. I do not believe OUAT is Live Action Disney.
Yes, the show has a cast of mostly Disney characters. However, it is very rare in Disney for two or more stories to intersect. Meanwhile, OUAT revolves around that very concept. Additionally, they live in a modern world. This may seem Enchanted-esque, but it still sets the show apart from Disney. Finally, the storylines are completely unlike anything Disney has done, despite usually having the villain/hero distinction.

  7. Actually, the better way to think of it would be as a live-action Kingdom Hearts.

  8. I don't think so, I think that they use the commonly accepted fairytales rather then the original ones most of the time, leaving out my favorite parts of fairytales-- the parts Disney omits that are good should be included, it should be based on those.
On the other hand I love their ways of tangling the stories together. And I love how they handled Rumplestilskin.
Side note, about the family...web... It sort of mirrors royalty in the Middle Ages-- intermarriages happened, the most distantly related took the throne. Obviously it's not the same but it's a little related isn't it?

  9. I believe that they took the stories that we knew as a child and made them more relateable for the time that we are in now. Also they made a point that you don't always have to be a hero or a villian. There is good and evil in everyone.

  10. I love that they have taken such a creative spin on Disney

  11. OM so I grew up watching Disney (I have seen every more atleast 5 times) and OUAT is in no way live action Disney besides they have the same characters, but I mean, OUAT i way darker than Disney movies and if you didn't notice most of the plot is not on the Disney movie plot, I am pretty sure the only characters story that was even close the original story was cinderella's but even that story is was off.

  12. last I checked ouat has a queer character or sorts while regular Disney movies don't

  13. The first season of OUAT, when it was good, had a very different feel than anything Disney. It was more of a drama than a fantasy episode
