Your neighborhood Ready Player One fan saw Ready Player One and.... didn’t really like it. The writing wasn’t great, the places where it was disloyal to the book were just kind of iffy, and the only thing really going for it was the really nice animation. STOP HERE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID SPOILERS. THIS IS YOUR SPOILER ALERT. The second Samantha and Wade met in real life, the movie turned almost totally focused on their romance. The camera was constantly angled to catch their eye contact, the way their hands or feet brushed, how they looked at each other. It turned a fun movie of 80s nostalgia into a trashy romance. It took the focus off the team and turned it into just Wade and Samantha. Aech was barely there for comedy’s sake, Daito and Sho probably had fifteen minutes of screen time, and Nolan didn’t seem nearly as threatening. I-R0K was okay at best. The writing was meh at best.
